Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the game plans and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Individual quality matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.

Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the recent team selection. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel discuss loving the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the youngster after proving that he is willing to make big calls.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude just has a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone must help him and create an environment which he can use this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring coaching. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in the Champions League match against the German side this week.

The question, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it harms the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

Tuchel discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in goals from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires Bellingham onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an more effective one.
