Putin Assures Uninterrupted Energy Deliveries to India in Rebuff of American Sanctions
During a defiant signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “continuous” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and declared their partnership were “immune to outside influence.”
A Message Aimed at the West
The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, that have tried to compel New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding links with Moscow. The context is in response to earlier US actions, notably the imposition of tariffs targeting New Delhi due to its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.
“Moscow remains a dependable supplier of oil and gas and everything required for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” he said. “Russia is prepared to keep ensuring the consistent delivery of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”
The Indian leader, though he did not mentioning oil directly, echoed the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and vital foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”
Challenging US Interference
Before the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had criticized American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, how can you deny India have the identical right?”
This trip represented his initial visit to India since the start of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a deliberate effort to project that the bond between the men remained intact.
An Unusual Reception
In a rare move, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. The two exchanged a hearty embrace like longtime companions before holding a private dinner on Thursday evening.
The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “based on shared respect and strong faith.”
Strengthening Defence and Economic Cooperation
The bilateral summit produced multiple important deals regarding defence and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD each year by the 2030 deadline.
Additionally agreed to reshape their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's largest exporter of defence equipment, its share has diminished over the past decade as India works to broaden its sources.
The official release emphasized plans for the co-development of sophisticated defence platforms, even if explicit details of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.
Ultimately, Russia and India affirmed that amid the “ongoing challenging, tense, and volatile international environment, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be resilient to foreign influence.”
