Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
