Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
