Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
