Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a vile and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
