Anthony Barry Explains The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he's dedicated supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His path from athlete to trainer began through volunteering coaching youngsters. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing with his first major job, he built a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods include mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire to get better is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Frank was one of those won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
