Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
